Dr. Thembi Xulu, EQUIP Chief of Party
Dr. Thembisile Xulu brings expertise and extensive experience to lead EQUIP as the Chief of Party. EQUIP is the first wholly African-led consortium of African-based partners to deliver the rapid scale up of innovative HIV treatment and prevention solutions towards meeting the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets in PEPFAR countries. Dr. Xulu was appointed to this role in 2015.
Dr. Xulu joined Right to Care in 2004 as Manager of the HIV Expert Treatment Programme and a year later was promoted to Project Manager, tasked with establishing strong partnerships with the Department of Health and building new partnerships with Right to Care. In 2007, she was appointed to the position of Clinical Director and was elected Director of the USAID grant. Under her leadership, the government programme became the largest programme in Right to Care and was the backbone of the organization’s prevention, care and treatment achievements. In 2010, Dr. Xulu participated in the prestigious Yale World Fellows Leadership Development Programme and in 2011, Dr. Xulu was appointed Managing Director of Right to Care.
Among her array of qualifications, Dr. Xulu holds an MBChB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Diploma in Obstetrics from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, a Diploma in HIV Management from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and a Master in Public Health (Health Policy and Management) from the University of the Witwatersrand. With Dr. Xulu’s guidance, EQUIP has successfully completed its inaugural year with successful milestones and achievements in reaching the 90-90-90 Sustainable Development Goals.
